Award-Winning Publisher

A Brief History

  • Jessica Kingsley Publishers is founded

    Pledging to be a publisher that produces ‘books that make a
    difference’, we begin our journey focusing on social sciences, higher education
    and behavioural sciences.

  • An imprint of JKP, 'Singing Dragon' is founded

    SD starts its life, focusing on martial arts and Chinese
    medicine. The first titles publish in 2008.

  • Spark in the Machine publishes

    Spark in the Machine by Daniel Keown, a seminal Chinese
    medicine text published. This book has now sold over 43k copies in all formats.

  • Really Strange series launched

    Pain is Really Strange published in 2015 in a collaboration between Steve Haines and artist Sophie Standing. This was followed by Trauma in late 2015, Anxiety in 2018, and Touch in 2021. A beautiful boxset of all four was published in 2021.

  • Yoga and yoga therapy list starts

    Yoga for a Happy Back by Rachel Krentzmann published in May 2016. SD continues to grow its list over the years, moving into complementary and alternative health, Qigong and ancient wisdom traditions for health and wellbeing.

  • JKP joins Hachette

    30 years after being founded, JKP is bought by Hachette,
    enabling it to extend its reach to readers and offer more opportunities for staff.

  • SD celebrates is 15th Anniversary

    Singing Dragon celebrates 15 years of inspiring, empowering
    and connecting expert communities with a virtual cross-disciplinary, professional event series.

  • Handspring Publishing is acquired

    JKP acquires Handspring Publishing, the leading professional publisher of evidence-based educational and reference books in manual therapies and movement.
